Autobahn

– Speed and the aesthetics of unpredictable –

Autobahn1.jpg

Photographing from a running car using the automatic function is like asking a child to choose a candy from the thousands of flavors in the supermarket. For a camera to fix an image while the parameters change relentlessly is like to force it to “change its mind” incessantly. Indeed, everything moves, but at different speeds. Nearby things whiz by like lightning, more distant ones gradually slowing down, and the horizon, phlegmatic, seems to be disinterested in everything. The light then varies suddenly, shadows and flashes of sunshine between trees and clouds, tunnels and artificial lights darting away. And so when the shutter clicks the parameters are already obsolete. The fixed image is an unexpected result, where the unpredictable ousts the photographer and the incalculable comes up with unrepeatable images.
